Nestled in the centre of the renowned Nant Estate in Tasmania’s Central Highlands and dating back to 1821, Australia’s oldest water-powered mill still operates,re-purposed to assist in the production of premium whisky.
The new tasting experience will take visitors through the three levels of this historically significant Mill, dating from 1857.Outdoor seating located at the bridge landing guides visitors into the basement of the Water Mill. Standing above the Clyde River, the tour begins at the wheel, with an industrial yet rich metal language leading people past the impressive equipment and up through the fabric of the building. With new permeable stairs and small opening in the flooring, visual connection through levels of the mill assists in telling the building’s story, bringing new life into the Mill.
Delicate insertions of intricate joinery offer a retail space to display whisky and other merchandise, literally putting Nant’s product on a pedestal. Backlit bottles line the rough internal walls and the feature copper tasting bar is the ideal place to sample the internationally renowned Nant Single Malt Whisky.
As visitors exit the Mill, they are welcomed into the heart of Nant, walking through the recently completed Distillery upgrade by JAWS which connects visitors with the existing cafe.
