JAWS Architects was engaged by Christian Homes Tasmania to extend the current independent unit offering at Snug Retirement Village. JAWS sought to blend the 9 new two bedroom dwellings with the existing facility originally designed by Heffernan Button Vos Architects.
Each dwelling is self-contained with modern kitchen and bathrooms. The layouts have been carefully configured incorporating the best practice for independent accessibility guidelines. However the homes do not feel institutional in any way. Mobility aids are carefully integrated into the design to appear like a regular home. Some elements such as shower screens are removable if mobility challenges require.
The elegant gabled structures perfectly reflect the country vernacular of the channel through clearly recognisable residential forms. Ancillary uses, bathrooms and kitchens are demarked by a lower, weatherboard interpretation of a ‘lean to’ adjunct to the main structure. These offer a bright coloured element to the pallet and a sense of individuality to each home.
