Minallo House Extension

This grand 19^th century home once commanded a proud position on a hill in West Hobart overlooking the City of Hobart and surrounds.

Indulging their passion for design and architecture, the current owners commissioned Jaws Architects over a period of time to progressively renovate and enhance their home.

The design facilitates the connection of each different living area to the outside and grounds. It also included the installation of new pivot doors and windows, a new kitchen and a dining room fit-out which included the reinstatement of the original fireplace. Much needed storage space was incorporated into a pantry store and laundry, which were cleverly positioned behind a glazed link fitted around the existing limestone paved courtyard.

This link connects to a new double-height garden conservatory, an indoor-outdoor room that catches the earliest winter sun whilst it nestles into the garden and opens fully to a large deck with pivot doors. The view from this room creates a compelling vista upwards, towards the sky and to large trees beyond.

The solution also saw the living room alter from a thoroughfare into a restful room with a new Bay window replacing French doors and creating a direct visual connection under an existing wisteria covered pergola, across the deck to the beautiful garden.
