The design of the King George V (KGV) Sports and Community Centre gave us a unique opportunity to create a facility that would promote social cohesion and engender community spirit.

The project involved redeveloping the Glenorchy District Football Clubrooms to create the new centre, co-locating with the Migrant Resource Centre as an inclusive community space and focal point for social activity.

An important principal of the design was to create an innovative and sustainable facility that would minimise impact on the local environment and help reduce operational costs. The design makes significant use of glass panels, open areas, natural ventilation, skylights and high ceilings to reduce dependency on artificial lighting and power.

An expansive forecourt creates a pedestrian-friendly precinct, allowing easy access to the new facility, football ground and public facilities. The building has a dual personality, with each facade responding to the two distinct settings on either side. The fluid form of the building is welcoming and open while creating a secure, strong edge to the ground and enhancing the enclosure of the oval.

The lower level includes a physiotherapy centre, gymnasium, hydrotherapy pool, change rooms, bars and café. On the first floor, football administration, the main commercial kitchen and function spaces take advantage of views over the oval. And on the top level, the Migrant Resource Centre spaces offer fantastic views of the hills above Glenorchy, with a link to the adjacent grandstand.

The construction stage was managed by Glenorchy City Council.
