When the Burnie City Council needed a new home for the Burnie Bowls Club, we proposed a design that would revive this local institution while also creating a recreational and social hub for the local community.

Located on the Burnie waterfront since the turn of the 20th Century, the clubhouse includes a new indoor green, enabling year-round bowling, and a large bistro area. This welcoming space meets the club’s social needs while also providing a venue for local community and social activities.

Gathering the club’s functional spaces together brought unity to the site, creating a stronger connection between the building and surrounding hills and coast. The structure also embraces the bowling greens to form a sheltered but sunny external terrace.

The design’s simple, clear span structural system provides a light, spacious interior and enabled quick, efficient construction on an extremely tight budget. Energy efficiency was also a consideration, with the large roof overhangs bringing shade, weather protection, and passive solar gain in winter.
